Independence vs. Interdependence:
The Hidden Power of Connection

Video Transcript

Well, here in the US, we just did Independence Day and, every year I think about how much our modern culture sort of worships independence. This, I think, lie that we can do it all ourselves. That you don’t really need anybody else. And if we’re strong enough, we can break away from families, from traditions, from things that seem to own us and do it better in our own unique, rebellious way, without any, anything holding us back.

And of course, hey, I, I can attest that living creatively outside the box is a path of expansion, freedom, and creativity. However, as I grow a little older and wiser, I realize that all of those choices I’ve made to live outside the box to do creative projects, to create things that seem impossible were only possible because of all the collaboration, the support, and the people who went before me.

Certainly a part of this is due to my privilege as a white appearing woman, and I see white appearing because my grandmother was black, my great grandmother, my great grandfather, like I come from a lineage of Caribbean African Americans. but you wouldn’t know it to look at me. So therefore, I have been privileged. I’ve been treated with the extra support and cultural benefits that go along with looking like a white girl.

And in that respect, I’m not independent. Similarly, I’ve been supported and privileged to have a family that would back me up even when I made my crazy decisions. And so many of the opportunities I’ve had in my life were given to me because of the support I’ve had from my family, from my community, from my friends. So am I really independent?

Are you completely independent?

Recently, I’ve been recognizing, my leadership and my ability to coach and guide and mentor and give readings and be a psychic advisor and strategic advisor for really powerful, creative, intuitively minded leaders.

My ability to be a leader in that way. Comes from my stability and my clarity that is supported by other people. So I get a clearing once a week with my own intuitive advisor. I get tune ups and tune ins from my own Apache mama. I get sound healing and harmonization support with my own sound healer and guide.

I get clearings from a number of places and people, professionals who have a high enough clearance level to clear me. And because of that support, because of the clan guardians that Maria introduced me to, that protect me every day because of my my dad, who continues to support me, kind of have my back, emotionally moral support.

And I know that if I needed it, he’d be there with pragmatic support, money, support, if I needed it.

I just have to own up to the fact that so much of what I do as a leader, as a creative, unique, seemingly out of the box, very independent leader. Comes from my interdependence on good people. It comes from my foundation of family and support system. It has my back, comes from my community.

And it’s I think interdependence is even more important than independence. I think that independence at some level. Is a fallacy.

Interdependence is the language of nature. The systems, the plants, the animals work in a beautiful, invisible concern with one another, constantly adjusting and harmonizing to one another in order to survive. We’ve separated ourself from nature so much that we’ve kind of forgotten that we’re the same. We need interdependence. We are that tree in the tree circle that communicates through the roots with the other trees, and we call it intuition or psychic ability.

And we think it’s so special, but really it’s natural. Our interdependence energetically is empathy, compassion, and it’s natural.

Interdependence. That’s the foundation for healthy, happy leaders and livers and lovers.
