Mellissa Seaman standing with two women outdoors with text reading “What's actually missing from retreats that dont land?” about guardians, catalysts, teachers, and transformational leadership.

On today's episode...

Have you ever been in a group experience that should have worked, but somehow didn’t?

Good people. Decent agenda. Maybe a smart person up front with a microphone.

And still, the room feels dead. Or weird. Or unsafe in a way nobody names. People get distracted, suddenly very interested in when the bathroom break is coming or why someone keeps blowing their nose so loudly in the middle of the deep thing.

Much of that magic, when a group is held well, is guardianship. Or the lack thereof.

Mellissa first learned the secret art of being a Guardian as a teenager at her Catholic high school, helping lead Teens Encounter Christ retreats. Her job was to sit at a round table with a group of students and help them feel safe, included, and contained enough to actually participate.

Years later, after she met her Apache mama and mentor, Maria Yraceburu, the importance of this role got driven home in a much deeper way.

Maria explained that in her family, the Guardian was one of the most important roles in ceremony. The Guardian holds the vessel of the group secure, makes sure people have what they need, and helps everyone feel belonging and connection, so the group can relax inside the experience.

It can sound trivial, like worrying about the bathroom or the snack table.

But under the logistics is the energetic message: I’ve got you. You can relax. You don’t have to stay vigilant about whether your basic needs will be met while someone else is trying to transform your life from the stage.

In this episode, you'll learn:

  • Why a room can feel dead, weird, or unsafe even when the agenda looks fine
  • What Mellissa learned as a teenage Guardian at retreat tables
  • How Maria Yraceburu named the Guardian as one of the most important roles in ceremony
  • Why bathroom breaks, snack tables, and basic needs are part of the energetic container
  • How the person quietly tracking the room may be the reason the whole thing works
  • Why teachers, facilitators, and people with the microphone cannot hold every role at once
