Want to meet your Spirit Guides? God is sooo big, it’s hard to have a direct talk with the big guy. So for millenia, humans have been imagining the different faces of the divine, to make it easier to relate. Spirit guides are one way we can use to talk to our divine helpers, that we call your Invisible Team, directly and without drama. Hey, you’ve been feeling the quiet nudges. You’ve been guided and supported your whole life. Why not come into direct contact and natural relationship with the faces of the Big Love that created you, adores you, and guides you in the highest good?
Are you wondering about your own spirit guides? Maybe you’ve heard of traditions that relate with spirit not just as one big parent God, but actually also as different personalities, as different parts, different faces of spirit that are helpful and friendly, that can guide you and help you. And let me tell you, I think that God is so much bigger than we can comprehend and so much greater than these human minds can really understand.
I think it can be very helpful to imagine spirit, to imagine the different faces of spirit, much in the same way as some traditions might honor angels or saints or different deities to allow yourself to relate with spirit in a more personal way. And in my mind, that’s where utilizing spirit guides this metaphor of spirit guides can be super helpful.
Now, did I just say metaphor? Yeah. Why? Because I believe that our guides or our spirit guides are not necessarily individual personalities floating around in the sky, but rather they’re our faces that we give to spirit. It’s like a metaphor. It’s it’s a conduit. It’s a way for us to directly relate with spirit in a friendly, collaborative way.
That does not mean that the energy of God is diminished in any way. It doesn’t mean that that the power of this great loving presence and creator is chopped up into pieces and therefore diminished in my mind. It actually just makes that energy accessible and relatable to us. So, for example, you might have had imaginary friends when you were a kid.
Do you remember having a special imaginary friend when you were a kid, or a special guardian angel that you imagined was protecting you and guiding you and helping you? Those were spirit guides. I mean, those were spirit guides. A lot of kids have imaginary friends that are deeply loving and trustworthy, and these energies of wisdom are helping this kid not feel lonely or helping the child make good choices.
Just like anything, of course, we have to be discerning about what we are connecting with. So if you conjure up in your mind some troubling troubled spirit that can help you get your needs met. That’s not it. Right. So if you’re trying to conjure something that is there just to help you get your way, that’s not God. That’s not spirit, that’s something else.
That’s not a spirit guide. So if you’re wondering about how to get started connecting with your spirit guides, how do you get started thinking about guides that you can relate with, that you can have around you, that you can feel loving you and guiding you every day of your life? Here are a couple of tips that have worked great for me, for my clients, for my friends.
For people that I’ve known a long time. The first one is, yes, the imaginary friend. You might think, oh well, I can’t just make one up. Yeah you can. Humans have been making up faces and names and stories for God for a really long time. And guess what? No matter what deity name, no matter what tradition you want to place on God, God will show up.
The Spirit of love wants to connect with you so deeply that no matter what way you create to welcome the spirit of love and oneness of the Great Creator into your life. Yes, God will show up. You know that Bible story that says something like, you know, as a parent would if your child asked for a fish, would you hand them a scorpion?
Your Divine Father in heaven would never hand you a scorpion, neither. I’m paraphrasing, obviously, but the truth is there. Spirit creator, divine oneness. If you approach with your heart, open with your discernment, clear calling on what is in the highest good, and then going ahead and imagining a spirit guide imagined one, your imagination will call forth the Spirit of God through that metaphor, because God’s not going to hand just scorpion when you’re asking for divine help.
Okay, so when you were a kid, you didn’t worry about how to imagine your imaginary friends. It was fun for you. So in a similar way, now consider what would be fun for you. Who could you relate with as an imaginary friend? Who could you know God works through? Who could you have full trust is going to hold the highest good for all beings as the absolute highest intention.
Because you want a good guy, right? Okay, so that’s number one. Another idea is to consider what animal? What animal have you always loved? Maybe unreasonably. One of my best friends loves giraffes. She can’t get enough of them. Well, I would really encourage her to imagine a giraffe as, like, an animal spirit guide. And then to further feel into.
Okay, what is giraffe really good at? They have a really tall neck. What does that mean? Oh, they have a really high vision of things. They can look and see over more territory than I can. Okay. That’s useful. Giraffe. They can actually run really fast. They’re very agile on those long legs. So there’s a gift that this face of divine creation has.
And cozy up to your animal guide, cozy up to your imaginary friend. Know that these are friendly conduits of spirit. These are not to be worshiped or to be feared or, you know, it’s it’s a friendship. Imagine it as a friendship and a collaboration. When I say collaboration, I want to point to a common mistake people have with their spirit guides, which is they imagine that they now have to do whatever the spirit guides says.
Now you’re the one in the body. You’re the one with free choice. And well, you are guides. Your spirit guides can infuse you and inspire to you. Can guide you and give you hints. It’s your choice that matters. So please don’t ever just imagine you’re just going to do whatever your spirit guide wants that’s not actually responsible.
Okay, so what else about Spirit guides? I want to affirm for you that you don’t have to see them with panoramic vision. Many of us have a more of a clear sentience or a clear audience where maybe we hear subtle messages, or maybe we can feel subtle presences. That’s enough. That’s plenty. That’s wonderful. You don’t have to be intuitive like everybody else is intuitive.
Allow your own natural gifts to guide you. And trust it. Trust your imagination as long as you are in alignment with the highest good and really inner prayer that your Divine Source makes deeper, more intimate contact with you through these imaginary friends. You’re going to be okay. Make sure that your intention is pure and clear, that your heart is open, and know that relating to God through different faces, through different friendly connections, is something that humankind has been doing in all the mystery traditions for literally all of recorded time.
I hope this has helped, and I hope it might give you a few ideas as to how to connect with your spirit guides. There’s always more to this. And so this is a topic that we talk about a lot in the Wisdom Collective, which is sort of my modern mystery school where me and my teachers, who all have 20 plus years of experience in the mysteries, including my Apache teacher, my bee mysteries teacher, my shamanic sister Alora, we are all coming to you with these sorts of empower sharing approaches to spirituality.
You are a divine creation yourself. You are the chooser and you are welcome to meet your spirit guides.
